07. MARINE RESERVES
No-take marine reserves are areas closed to fishing and other extractive human uses. They conserve ecosystems, sustain fisheries and benefit coastal communities. However, only 1% of the ocean is fully protected under this category. The Revillagigedo Archipelago, in the Mexican Pacific, can become a successful marine reserve. Currently, fishing is banned in a narrow strip of just over 10 kilometers around each island
A large increase of the no-take zone would not affect tuna fishing, which would even increase its long-term yield thanks to the replenishing of stocks inside the reserve. Mexico has a unique opportunity to become a global conservation leader by creating the largest no-take marine reserve in North America.
